Dublinked Innovation Network Workshop

We invite interested parties to join us for a Dublinked Innovation Network workshop on the theme of data analytics for Dublin data. This workshop will showcase tools that are available, and provide examples of ongoing projects and research in this area, with presentations both from Dublin City and IBM on traffic movement analyses and the Centre for Applied Data Analytics Research (CEADAR), among others. Speakers on the day will provide an overview of the current state of landscape, future trends and identify challenges in the area.

Speakers

Dermot Kinane, Dublin City Council, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

Dermot Kinane works for Dublin City Council (DCC) in the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Section where he has contributed to advancements in public transport (Luas extensions, real-time passenger information (RTPI) and bus priority) over the past seven years with the deployment of various ITS solutions throughout the city. Dermot will give an update on INSIGHT an EU-funded FP7 project. DCC, one of the use-cases of the project, provide data to the INSIGHT consortium partners (University of Athens, Technical University of Dortmund, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, IBM and Fraunhofer IAIS) so that their expertise can be utilised to provide the DCC traffic section with an automated method of monitoring unusual congestion throughout the road network. Under the scope of the project, data from such disparate sources as DCCs traffic management system (SCATS), location information from the Dublin Bus fleet, Twitter messages and data from a Crowdsourcing app will be used.

Dr. Ingo Keck, Senior Post Doctoral Fellow, DIT and member of CeADAR (Centre for Applied Data Analytics Research)

Dr. Ingo Keck graduated in physics at the University of Regensburg, Germany, and holds a doctor europeus in computer science from the University of Granada, Spain. He is an internationally recognised researcher in the field of advanced data analytics and statistics, has years of experience in writing grant proposals and was leader of various academic open source projects. After working as researcher, professor and lecturer in Spain and Germany he recently joined the Centre for Advanced Data Analytics Research (CeADAR), DIT, Ireland. Ingo has authored over 45 peer-reviewed publications and specialises in computational intelligence and machine learning. Since 2013 he is also involved in the Open Government Partnership and the Open Data movement in Ireland. His presentation will be on Advanced Data Analytics And Open Data.

Joseph Borza, Founder of Energy Elephant

Joseph Borza is founder of Irish tech start-up EnergyElephant. He is a chartered engineer and has over a decade of experience working in the energy and environment sectors in Ireland and abroad. He is an active and passionate member of Dublin’s startup community and has worked on numerous research, development and deployment projects. Joseph’s presentation will introduce EnergyElephant, the award winning startup that focuses on making sense of energy data, quickly and easily. From multinational organisations to residential homes, EnergyElephant has analysed millions of data sets to ascertain the “smartable” demand of these entities. Today, over 60% of Irish electricity demand can come from intermittent energy sources, and matching this generation with smartable demand will be one of the greatest challenges for the Irish energy system in the years ahead.

Martin Stephenson, IBM, Smarter Cities Technology Centre, Dublin Research Lab

Martin Stephenson works as a Software Engineering Researcher in the Dublin Research Lab, in IBM Ireland, where his main role is as a Software Architect on the City Fabric project. He is responsible for the solution architecture and technical implementation of the “Open Innovation Portal” which is currently being used as the open data engine for the publishing, and metadata tagging of open data for Dublin via Dublinked. His current areas of interest are around semantic and relational modeling of city data, open data, and design and implementation of city scale data applications. Martin’s presentation will introduce and demonstrate a system that provides a single data access point, created in a Web-Based user interface (UI), that enables analytical or visualisation applications to easily run on large sets of data files, or on views of the data.
